Hazardous materials can be found almost anywhere. The Rock Island Fire Department’s 20-member Hazardous Materials Team is prepared to respond to any hazardous materials call. These Hazardous Materials Technicians are trained to confine or contain hazardous materials. All other firefighters are trained to the Operations level and are ready to work with the technicians for an efficient response.
The Office of the Fire Marshall is responsible for maintaining records of all hazardous materials within City boundaries, as well as underground and above ground fuel tanks.
The Rock Island Fire Department is also part of MABAS (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) 43 along with the Rock Island Arsenal Fire Department, Moline Fire Department, East Moline Fire Department, Bettendorf Fire Department, and the Quad Cities International Airport. MABAS 43 provides a Hazardous Materials Response Team that is prepared to handle emergencies ranging from a leaking 55 barrel to a railcar leak.
