Kids and wanna-be kids of all ages can revisit or experience summer camp fun for the first time with a free “Camp Wanna-Be-Reading” event on Wednesday, June 29 at the Rock Island Downtown Library, 401 19th Street.

Kids and wanna-be kids of all ages can revisit or experience summer camp fun with a free “Camp Wanna-Be-Reading” event on Wednesday, June 29 at the Rock Island Downtown Library,401 19th Street. 

The free outdoor event lasts from 4:00 to 6:30 pm in the parking lot of the Downtown Library, and features camp crafts and activities for all ages. In the event of rain, activities will move inside. 

“Whether summer camp time is now or was a long time ago, we’re offering free activities to help our guests experience the fun of those camp-life days,” said Lisa Lockheart, the Library’s publicity and outreach liaison. The event matches the summer “Camp iRead” theme, which offers reading challenges for all ages and more than 100 events that encourage patrons to Read Beyond the Beaten Path. 

Free Library-led activities include friendship bracelets, candle dipping, boat races, button making, and yard games. Attendees can also earn an activity badge in the summer reading challenge, good for one drawing ticket, pick up 5 camper “brag tags” while supplies last, and stamp their QC Libraries Summer Trail Guide. Camp lanyards available while supplies last. Additional stations and activities will be offered from Rock Island Parks and Recreation, the Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois, the Army Corps of Engineers visitor's center, and The Rock Island Fire Department. 

For that camp food flavor, free hot dogs, chips, and water will be available while supplies last, and Kona Ice will be on site to sell shaved ice treats. 

Most activities will be under a large tent next to the library building. As a result, the Library lot will be closed to parking from 8:00 am on Wednesday, June 29 through 10:00 am Thursday, June 30. Library patrons needing drive-up book return may pull into the Curbside lane in the alley and call 309-732-7323.Library guests and event attendees should park on the street and in multiple public lots surrounding the library. Camp iRead Beyond the Beaten Path summer reading challenges and events for all ages run until July 31 at the Rock Island Public Library. As of June 21, participants had read more than 118,000 minutes. All reading challenges and events are open to anyone.
