November also brings a heap of free events for lifelong learners at the Rock Island Public Library. From a sneak peek of The American Revolution to an information session on aromatherapy, there's plenty for adult learners.
In addition to ongoing book clubs, a knitting circle, movie, and coffee and conversation events, adults can connect with new people and interests through a variety of special Rock Island Public Library events this month.
On November 11, the library features a sneak preview of The American Revolution, the new landmark series from Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein, and David Schmidt. This preview offers a sweeping overview of the series—illuminating its central themes and a look at the ideas, struggles, and ideals that continue to define the American story. The free event takes place from 2 pm to 3 pm at the Downtown Library. The complete 12-hour documentary officially premieres on public broadcasting and station apps November 16. Check local listings for times.
The 28th annual Frieze Lectures series partnership with Augustana College continues November 6 and 13, with lectures on Death and the Poet, by Rebecca Wee, and Death and the Anthropologist, with Dr. Adam Kaul. Both events occur at 2 pm in the Rock Island Downtown Library Community Room, and are free and open to the public.
Feeling nostalgic? Try “Thanksgiving in 1950s America,” at 2 pm, Tuesday, November 25 at the Downtown Library. The presentation features two videos, “100 Forgotten Things from 1950s America,” and a 1951 public service film, “The True Meaning of Thanksgiving.”
And if you’re curious about aromatherapy, Dr. Cathy Rosenbaum joins the library on Wednesday, November 26 to break down methods, evidence-based clinical uses, considerations, and precautions to keep in mind when using essential oils. The free Aromatherapy presentation is from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm in the Downtown Library Community Room. Registration is appreciated but not required. Dr. Rosenbaum is a holistic clinical pharmacist, certified fitness nutrition coach, and the Founder/CEO of Rx Integrative Solutions, a private health and wellness consulting practice in Cincinnati OH.
All Rock Island Public Library buildings close at 6 pm on Wednesday, November 26, and remain closed Thursday and Friday, November 27 and 28, for the Thanksgiving holiday. The Downtown Library, Southwest Branch, and Watts-Midtown Branch are open from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday, November 29.
Upcoming December events include the return of Tuneful Tuesdays on December 2 with the Riverbend Bronze handbell choir, A Visit with Jane Austen on December 6 with a professional actress portrayal of the famous author, and multiple craft events to register for.
