The time change and cooler nights bring more than fall leaves. November also brings a heap of free events for families to spend time together at the Rock Island Public Library, including the library's first Dinovember Day on Saturday, November 15.
The free drop-in event takes place from 10 am to 1:30 pm in the Rock Island Downtown Library Children’s Room on the ground floor, 401 19th Street. Stomp in for roaring good fun for the whole family with dinosaur-themed activity stations, scavenger hunt, dino-mite crafts, and plenty of dinosaur books to check out. It’s recommended for families with kids from pre-Kindergarten through elementary school ages. This is the first year that Rock Island Library has participated in the monthly celebration, which helps spark wonder and imagination.
On the same day, families can play board games together at the Downtown Library. The all-ages Family Board Game Day is from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm on December 15 in the library’s second-floor Community Room. Children, teens, and adults can try out a wide variety of board games for all ages. Games will also be available for checkout.
Booklovers of all ages can take advantage of Book Bingo, Tuesday, November 18, from 4 pm to 5 pm at the Downtown Library. The event features fast-paced bingo games with books as the prizes. In addition to winning books, readers can take the fun home with them with special reader’s bingo cards. It’s free and open to all ages.
Kids interested in trading card games can connect at the MagiKids event on Wednesday, November 19, also from 4 to 5 pm at the Downtown Library. The event offers a chance to learn how to play Magic, The Gathering, which involves trading cards to deploy magic creatures and tactics against a series of foes. The library will supply multiple packs of cards. Players can build their own decks, learn how to play, and keep the cards they choose. The event is free and open to any elementary-school age child, but does require registration. To sign up, visit the library website or call 309-732-7360.
Upcoming December events include the return of Tuneful Tuesdays on December 2 with the Riverbend Bronze handbell choir, A Visit with Jane Austen on December 6 with a portrayal of the author by a professional actress, and The Polar Express Party December 13 with family crafts, activities, and cocoa. All of the above are free and open to anyone.
