[ARCHIVED] Fall into some family fun at the Rock Island Library

It’s Library Card Sign Up Month, and that's a great time to fall into some family fun. The Rock Island Public Library is offering a wide variety of educational and entertaining activities for all ages this September.

It’s Library Card Sign Up Month, and patrons of all ages will find a wide variety of educational and entertaining activities to enjoy at the Rock Island Public Library this month. The selection of free activities offers choices for all ages, a special family bingo event, and events for children and teens. 

Mixed and All-Age Events: 

  • Buzzfeed Unsolved Fest: 5:00 to 6:00 pm, Sept. 8, Downtown Library, 401 19th Street. For teens and adults. Participants will watch episodes of Buzzfeed Unsolved, and learn about the upcoming book, Buzzfeed Unsolved, Supernatural. 
  • Southwest Take and Make Craft, Fall Garland: Sept. 13, all ages. Register, then pick up your You Light Up My Life garland to make at home. Indicate preferred RIPL pickup point when registering. To sign up, visit the library website or call 309-732-7338.
  • Star Wars Trivia: 5:00 to 6:00 pm, Sept. 27, Southwest Branch, 9010 Ridgewood Road. Fast-paced trivia game for all ages of Star Wars fans. Free, no registration required. 

Teens, Grades 7 to 12: 

  • Your Future in STEAM kit: For grades 7-12. Airplane challenge – can you solve the problem and make something that flies? Free kit pickup starts Sept. 8, available while they last. Funded by a Project Next Generation grant through the Illinois State Library. 

Children & Families: In person storytimes return to Downtown this month! 

  • In-person story times: Tuesday, Sept. 13, 20 & 27, 10:30 am at the Downtown Library Children’s Room, 401 19th Street.  Wednesdays, Sept. 14 and 28 at 11:00 am at the Southwest Branch, 9010 Ridgewood Road. Toddler Tale storytimes offer engaging read-aloud stories and activities for ages 5 & under. Free, no registration required. 
  • Petite Picassos Art for Littles: Sept. 21 at 11:00 am, Southwest Branch. Monthly messy art program for ages 5 and under. Apron supplied. 
  • Family Bingo: Sept. 29, 4:30 to 5:30 pm, Downtown Library Community Room. Since Friday is parent-teacher conference day at Rock Island-Milan district schools, Thursday is a great night to play bingo together as a family for candy prizes! We’ll play as many games as we can fit in an hour. Free, Registration required for everyone attending. Children 6 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Registration starts Sept. 1. All library events are free and open to the public, no library card required. (Though if you live in Rock Island or our Milan-Blackhawk Area Public Library District service area, it's easy to apply or renew online or in-person!) 

Every September, the Rock Island Public Library joins the American Library Association (ALA) in reminding learners of all ages that signing up for a library card is the first step on a path to academic achievement and lifelong learning. Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the back-to-school season. 

To sign up for a library card or to learn more about the library’s resources and programs, please visit the library website. Rock Island Library will also offer special card drives with the Library 2Go bookmobile at several public events, including the Rock Island Independents Vintage Football game on Sept. 10, the Greek Fest on Sept. 16, and the Rock Island High School home football game on Sept. 30.
