Hug a Book Event Cover picture of fall books with stickers and more kit items

Families can sign up to pick up a Hug-A-Book: Play kit next week filled with at-home activities to support preschool learning through play. The event kit is available at Rock Island Public Library locations.

To sign up for the at-home Hug-A-Book kit, visit the library event calendar or call 309-732-7360.  Registered participants may pick up the kit anytime during library hours between September 21 to 26. Pick up is available inside the Rock Island Downtown and Southwest Libraries from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday-Friday, or via Library Curbside pickup Monday-Saturday, by appointment. Kits may also be picked up by prior arrangement at Library2Go Mobile Library stops. [Schedule on website.]

The kit is designed for early learning needs of two-to-five-year-olds, and is available at no additional charge to any registered participant. This year’s take-home “Hug-A-Book event in a bag” includes a free book to keep, the Fall into Play bingo sheet of outdoor activities, information on the importance of play, a survey, chalk, crayons, a simple craft, a list of community services for preschoolers, and library information.

This month’s Learning Through Play event is presented by the Rock Island Public Library, the Child Abuse Council and the All Our Kids (AOK) Early Childhood Network. Book funding was received from the Merrill Harris Memorial Fund of the Rock Island Public Library Foundation. The library offers a series of Hug-A-Book early learning events each year to help create young readers by fostering a love of books and reading. Each event meets at least one of the “sing, talk, read, write and play” skills of the “Every Child Ready to Read” learning model.
