FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Moline, IL – The Mayors of Moline, East Moline, Rock Island, Silvis, and Milan have issued curfew orders starting this evening at 9:00 p.m. until 5 a.m. Working together the Mayors have agreed to curtail movement in the neighboring communities due to the increase in the number and seriousness of crimes committed against persons and property in and around the Quad Cities. This has created a menace to the preservation of public peace safety health, morals and welfare, according to the orders being issued.

The recent death of George Floyd in Minneapolis has resulted in protests throughout the country. While the Mayors appreciate and support peaceful protests, some, under the guise of civil protest, have committed violence against persons as well as damaged property throughout the Quad Cities.

Mayor Stephanie Acri of Moline said, “Having a voice and speaking out against injustice is a well embraced constitutional right, however doing so in a violent way by damaging, vandalizing and destroying property is not. Therefore, I and the Mayors of our neighboring communities are issuing this curfew until some sense of safety and order can be restored”.

The curfew is effective starting at 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following day. It is effective today, Monday, June 1, 2020, and each night thereafter and will continue each night until the Order is rescinded.

Under the Order, all persons must be indoors during the Curfew Hours with the exception of City and government officials, City and government employees (e.g., police, fire, public works), military personnel, and medical personnel, or credentialed members of the news media. Travel to and from work during the Curfew Hours is permitted. All persons not indoors during the Curfew Hours should be prepared to show valid identification.

In addition, Metro announced that “in an abundance of caution for our workforce and our riders, Metro has made the decision to suspend public transit service by 7 p.m. tonight. Service will resume as scheduled tomorrow morning, and we will continue to monitor and respond to the situation in the Quad Cities as it unfolds”. “This is especially difficult time as we were just coming out of the Covid-19 crises and reopening some restaurant and business activity. We believe this proactive approach to this newest challenge will provide the most safety for our community. We hope to rescind this order as soon as possible”, according to Mayor Thoms. 

In Illinois, the municipalities must issue individual civil orders and Rock Island County is in support of this action. Other communities within the County may be issuing curfews
and are working through that process.
