It seems hard to believe, but summer is rapidly drawing to a close for children enrolled in the Rock Island/Milan school system. To make sure they're ready to learn, the Rock Island Public Library and Twin Rivers RAH! Rotary will offer a free back-to-school event on Thursday, July 25.
Ready, Set ... School! is a free drop-in event for ages four to seven offered from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on Thursday, July 25 in the Rock Island Downtown Library Children's Room, 401 19th Street. Parents, caregivers, and children may drop in anytime during the event for activities that build school readiness, including:
- Rocket craft
- Flash card learning games
- Sky Full of Stories station
- Universe of Stories gazette
- Draw me a star
- Very Hungry Caterpillar and Very Busy Spider activities
- 10 Little Rubber Ducks
The chosen activities work on everything from kindergarten readiness skills, such as holding a pencil and following instructions, to more advanced grade level skills, such as reading, writing, and counting. Twin Rivers Rotary volunteers will also distribute free books as part of their commitment to community literacy.
No registration is required. The free event is part of the library's Universe of Stories summer programming and reading challenges, running through July 31 at all Rock Island Libraries.
