If you're looking for free and fun ways to fill time during the Rock Island/Milan School District 41 schools fall break, the Rock Island Public Library is offering a number of special programs just for you.
Rock Island/Milan School District 41 schools officially go on fall break starting Monday, Oct. 8. The Rock Island Public Library is offering families plenty of fun and free ways to fill time and learn with a number of special programs. Special fall intersession programming at Rock Island Libraries includes:
- Lego Build Days: Monday, Oct. 8 and 15, from 9:00 am to noon, in the Rock Island Downtown Library Children's Room, 401 19th Street. Librarians will have LEGO-brand bricks out for drop-in fun creating brick art for display in the Children's Room. All ages.
- Dinosaurs Unleashed! Interactive Movie Night, Tuesday, Oct. 9, 5:30 to 7:45 pm, Rock Island Downtown Library. It's the 25th anniversary of the original Jurassic Park movie, and we're celebrating with an Interactive movie screening, snacks and trivia. T-Rex may even show up! (An interactive movie is where viewers respond to characters and on-screen action with scripted phrases and moves.) While this is a family event, the library recommends that children be old enough to handle the movie's dinosaur-related mayhem. Registration is not required.
- Firefighter Storytimes, 10:30 am, Wednesday, Oct. 10 at the Rock Island Southwest Library, 9010 Ridgewood Road; Friday, Oct. 12 at the Rock Island Downtown Library, and Tuesday, Oct. 16 at the Rock Island 30/31 Library, 3059 30th Street. October is Fire Prevention Month. Join us at each location for firefighter stories, songs, and to meet a firefighter and look at a real fire truck! Ages 5 and under.
- Family Movie Morning: Thursday, Oct. 11, at 10:30 am, Rock Island Downtown Library. Join us for a funny, family-friendly Halloween movie. No registration needed.
- DIY Pet Toy Craft, 2:00 to 4:00 pm, Thursday, Oct. 18, Rock Island Southwest Library. Use up-cycled materials to create fun and unique "do-it-yourself" toys for your pets, or donate what you make to shelter pets at the Quad City Animal Welfare Center in Milan. We’ll deliver donated toys for you. All ages/family, no registration required.
Other, regularly scheduled events for kids and families offered during intersession include Petite Picassos at the 30/31 Library and Southwest Craft Night on Oct. 9, the Bluestem Book Buddies book club and STEAM-Azing owl pellet dissection event on Saturday, Oct. 13 at the Downtown Library; and a Tween and Teen Gaming Night on Oct. 18, also at Downtown.
For adults who may need a break as well, scheduled events for adults during the same time frame include Coffee and a Movie morning on Oct. 8, SEW Much Fun on Oct. 11, "How Not to Die" healthy lifestyle presentations on Oct. 8 and 15, a Ghost Crier talk on paranormal investigation on Oct. 16, Friday Technology Open Labs, and a number of book clubs for adults.
