Permit Types

Permit Requirements Vary Based on Scope of Work


Permits issued by the Public Works Department

Concrete/Flatwork Permits for driveways and sidewalks, as well as Grading & Drainage Permits for Stormwater are issued by the Public Works Department (309) 732-2200.

Permits issued by the Inspection Division:

Building Permit – Commercial/Industrial/Multi-Family
Required when erecting or modifying any new structure on a commercial/industrial/multi-family property or when adding on to any existing commercial/industrial/multi-family structure.
  • New structures/Additions include but not limited to: garages, pole barns, sheds, fences (over 6 feet), retaining walls (4 feet or higher from the footing), loading docks, truck scales, and cell towers.
  • Remodels include any alterations or repairs to the existing structure including but not limited to siding, windows, doors, soffit, facia, drywall, egress windows, basement waterproofing, etc.

Building Permit – Residential
Required when erecting or modifying any residential property or when adding on to any existing residential structure.
  • New structures/Additions include but not limited to: garages, pole barns, sheds, pergolas, gazebos, swimming pools, fences (over 6 feet), retaining walls (4 feet or higher from the footing).
  • Remodels include any alterations or repairs to the existing structure including but not limited to siding, windows, doors, soffit, facia, drywall, egress windows, basement waterproofing, etc.
Roofing Permit
Required for roofing whenever replacement/repairs exceed 100 square feet.

Demolition Permit
Required for demolition of buildings or parts of buildings.

Mechanical Permit
Required for all HVAC/mechanical work.

Plumbing Permit
Required for all plumbing work.

Electrical Permit
Required for all electrical work.

Utility Turn On Permit
Required in order to restore gas and/or electric to any changed structure.

Sign Permit
Required for all sign work.

Swimming Pool
Required for the installation of above ground or in-ground pools holding more than 24" of water. Please view the swimming pool handout that is attached to the permit application.
