Commission Responsibilities
The Arts Advisory Committee’s mission is to promote the creation, understanding, appreciation, and awareness of the arts in the City. This Committee acts in an advisory capacity to the Mayor and City Council on matters related to the arts and cultural development of the City. They also work as a liaison to and in partnership with local, regional, state, or national arts organizations as appropriate to foster support for the arts. They actively determine ways in which the arts can enhance the quality of life in the City and foster community economic and social growth. The Committee has had several accomplishments.
The Arts Advisory Committee drafted the Rock Island Arts Plan with the goal of increasing the level of arts activity and awareness in the community, particularly in The District.
Artspace, a Minneapolis based not-for-profit firm that develops affordable space for artists and arts organizations, conducted a feasiblity study for Rock Island in March 2008. The purpose of the feasiblity review was to determine whether there are structures in the City which are of interest to Artspace and to gauge general community support for a project.
For the next step, Artspace conducted an online artist market survey in early 2009 to determine demand for housing and studio space for artists and 204 respondents participated. Artspace indicates “the findings clearly support a small to moderately sized live/work project in Rock Island” it its interpretation letter.
