Dear Business Owner,
To continue providing a high level of safety to all of our citizens, strong planning and emergency response capabilities is a necessity. In order to meet this responsibility the City of Rock Island has instituted a Hazardous Material Permit Ordinance, which reads:
The City of Rock Island, IL, Code of Ordinances, Section 6-16, Chapter 6, Article II, “it shall be unlawful to engage in any business activity involving the manufacturing, storage, sale or use of hazardous materials and chemicals or devices or to maintain, store or handle such materials; to conduct processes which produce conditions hazardous to life or property because of the potential for fire or explosion or to install equipment used in connection with such activities without first obtaining a permit for each activity from the fire marshal or his delegate.”
A hazardous material is any substance in any quantity or form posing a risk to health, safety and/or property; a substance which by its nature, containment and reactivity has the capability of inflicting harm during an accidental occurrence; characterized as being toxic, corrosive, flammable, reactive, an irritant and thereby posing a threat to health and the environment when improperly managed.
The City Ordinance requires businesses that handle, use, make, sell, generate, or store hazardous materials or hazardous wastes, to obtain a permit. During the fire department’s annual fire inspection this year, a short inventory will be taken of the types and quantities of material on your premises. From this assessment a hazardous material fee will be generated.
If you have any questions about this program please contact Fire Marshal Jeff Hindman, 732-2800.
Remember, it is Federal and State law that requires compliance with this City of Rock Island Ordinance. We will assist you in every way to comply with these laws.
Respectfully,
Douglas R. Vroman, Fire Chief
Rock Island Fire Department
