HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

Hazardous Materials are located throughout all communities for house cleaning, in transport, and used in industrial settings.

The Rock Island Fire Department is prepared to respond to any hazardous materials call with 16 Hazardous Materials Technicians. These Technicians are trained to confine or contain hazardous materials. All other Firefighters are trained to the Operations level and are ready to work with the Technicians for an efficient response.

The Office of the Fire Marshall is responsible for maintaining records of all hazardous materials within the city boundaries, as well as underground and above ground fuel tanks.

The Rock Island Fire Department is also part of MABAS (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) 43 along with the Rock Island Arsenal Fire Department, Moline Fire Department, East Moline Fire Department, Bettendorf Fire Department, and the Quad Cities International Airport. MABAS 43 provides a Hazardous Materials Response Team that is prepared to handle emergencies ranging from a leaking 55 barrel to a railcar leak.

Please contact the Special Operations office with questions on response or training at (309) 732-2800.
