The Rock Island City Council 2008 schedule for regular meetings is shown above. The shaded dates indicate the Mondays on which the Council will not meet. May 15, 2006 an amended Ordinance was passed which eliminated the meeting on the last Monday of each month, with the exception of July and August, when the Council meets only the second and fourth Mondays.
The agenda for the meeting is available in the Office of the City Clerk, or the Office of the Mayor and City Manager, after 4:00 p.m. on the Friday prior to each meeting. Agenda items are printed in the Rock Island Argus on Sunday or Monday, with an abbreviated listing shown on Cable Channel 9 beginning Friday evening. In addition, the current Agenda with attachments, and approved Minutes are available at http://www.rigov.org/.
The City Council meetings are held at 6:45 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, on the third floor of Rock Island City Hall, 1528 Third Avenue. An elevator is conveniently located in the lobby. The meetings are open to the public, and are also televised live on Cable Channel 9 (Public Access Channel).
Anyone may attend a Council meeting. To speak on an item on the printed agenda, simply let the Mayor, an Alderman, or the City Clerk know that you are there to speak on a specific item, and you will be called on when the item is discussed. To speak on a topic that is not on the printed agenda, sign in on the sheet at the entrance to Council Chambers. You are asked to write your name, address and the topic you wish to address. You will be called on during the “Other Business” portion toward the end of the meeting. Copies of the printed agenda will be on the lectern at the entrance to Council Chambers on Monday evening. The City Council may not vote on any issue that is not on the printed Agenda.
The Rock Island City Council holds some special meetings during the year. In the fall, they hold a Goal Setting Session on a Friday and Saturday. They also have a series of meetings to discuss the budget during February and/or March on Saturdays. The dates and times for these meetings are announced at a regular council meeting.
