5. 625 23rd Street Marshall House
Broadway National Register Historic District: 1998
Architectural Style: Greek Revival
Construction Date: circa 1856
The Robert Marshall house is one of the oldest documented homes in Rock Island. The home was built for Robert Marshall of Mason County Kentucky in the mid to late 1850s. Marshall moved to Rock Island in 1855 to practice law. He was a cousin of Lucy Duke Buford, wife of Charles Buford and one of Rock Island’s pioneering Kentucky contingent. Both were related to the famous Supreme Court Justice, John J. Marshall. In the early 1860s, Marshall and his wife Elizabeth moved back to Kentucky for unknown reasons. In 1868, Jephthah Monroe purchased the Marshall house. The home has since changed owners many times.
The home reflects the Greek Revival period of architecture. It is a simple but elegant rowhouse with parapet walls. The frieze along the roofline that originally contained brackets, the transom and sidelights around the front entrance, and the small flat pilasters are all characteristic of the Greek Revival style.
