ROCK ISLAND PRESERVATION COMMISSION
Duties
The Rock Island Preservation Commission has been created for the purpose of identifying such property, structures or areas within the City that are historically significant in that they exemplify or reflect the cultural, social, economic, political or architectural history of Rock Island, the State of Illinois or the nation. The Preservation Commission performs the landmark designation of significant property, structures and historic districts and advises the City Council if such designations are appealed. It is the duty of the Preservation Commission to protect the distinctive visual characteristics of landmarks and historic districts by reviewing, giving advice and passing upon changes to their exterior architectural appearance. The Preservation Commission also takes a lead role in educating the public as regards the architectural and historical heritage of our community.

Three years. Appointed members may only serve two consecutive terms.
Public Meetings
Regular meetings are scheduled for the fourth Wednesday of each month (except November and December) at 4:00 p.m. Meetings are scheduled at 5:15 p.m. to consider landmark or historic district designation applications. On a requested basis, the Preservation Commission will hold informal advice sessions for landmark owners considering exterior alterations to their properties. These advice sessions will be scheduled before a regular meeting at 3:30 p.m. or after a regular meeting (time estimated). The Preservation Commission regularly meets in the Personnel Conference Room in the basement of Rock Island City Hall, 1528 3rd Avenue, Rock Island, Illinois. If a larger crowd is anticipated, meetings will be moved to the Council Chamber on the third floor and signs will be posted. You may access a listing of meeting agendas and minutes.
