    The Planning Commission has three main duties in its recommending role to the City Council: - Prepare comprehensive land use, corridor, and neighborhood plans. - Prepare amendments to City land development ordinances (zoning, subdivision, and sign ordinances). - Conduct public hearings for zoning, site plan review, and subdivision requests initiated by citizens.

    The Board of Zoning Appeals has final City review authority through conducting public hearings for the following land development requests: -Zoning special exception, authorized uses, and temporary uses -Interpretation of zoning ordinance and zoning map

  9. Preservation Commission Meeting

    October 15, 5:30 pm @ City Hall

    The Rock Island Preservation Commission was created in 1984 for the purpose of identifying such property, structures or areas within the City of Rock Island, Illinois that are historically significant. The Preservation Commission performs the landmark designation of significant property, structures and historic districts and advises the City Council if such designations are appealed. It is the duty of the Preservation Commission to protect the distinctive visual characteristics of landmarks and historic districts by reviewing, giving advice and passing upon changes to their exterior architectural appearance. The Preservation Commission also takes a lead role in educating the public as regards the architectural and historical heritage of our community.

  12. Children's Halloween Party

    October 24, 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm @ Second Baptist Church and The Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center

    Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center and Second Baptist Church of Rock Island will co-host a Trunk or Treat event scheduled for October 24 from 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm. Both sites will offer activities including music, face painting, a haunted house, and decorating their own cookies and cupcakes. Trunk or Treat is an opportunity to provide a fun and more importantly a safe environment for the children in the Rock Island community during the Halloween season. Our volunteers will be decorating their cars for children to safely trick or treat from car-to-car instead of house-to-house. Trunk or Treat will take place at the Second Baptist Church parking lot.

    You're invited to take a trick-or-treating tour of the beautiful 103 year old Hauberg Mansion. We will be doing crafts, fun Halloween games and making a treat for your doll. You will receive a costume for your doll to wear at the party. Don't forget your camera! Cute doll clothing and accessories will also be available for purchase.
