Free Classic Queen Anne Double Houses, 2513 7 Avenue

Fairly common in Rock Island, the double house combines two mirror image single family homes into a single unit, retaining separate entrance and porches. These designed double homes are not to be confused with single-family homes that were converted into duplexes beginning in the 1920s and which accelerated after World War II. In Rock Island, many double houses assume Foursquare and even Ranch characteristics. They were also a frequently used house form for the United States Housing Corporation 1918 Government Housing project. However, homes with Free Classic Queen Anne details are the most common found in Rock Island, and tend to be of higher style, with more details, trim and more intricate roof lines. These Free Classic Queen Anne double houses were constructed most often in Longview, Broadway and Greenbush neighborhoods.

The Free Classic Queen Anne double houses have a centered full facade or half facade front porch or separate corner porches. Very rarely, a double house had a wraparound porch. The house form was often boxy, with a hipped roof or cross gable roof. The Free Classic Queen Anne details would be evident in the Tuscan columns on the porch, the pedimented gables either above the porch or in the top half story, and in the two story bays on the minor facades. Many of these homes were very symmetrical and plain, and only the highest style double homes had details like fish scale shingles, brackets or dentils. The Free Classic Queen Anne double homes were built from approximately 1905 to 1920, with the earliest double homes influenced by Queen Anne and Colonial Revival styles, and the later ones hinting at Craftsman styles. However, even with Colonial Revival or Craftsman details, some of these homes would preserve the Free Classic Queen Anne house form, particularly the two story bays, cross gables or gabled dormers.
