Raymond & Beulah Criswell House, 3913 14th Street

This symmetrical, side-gabled, brick Georgian Revival house was built ca. 1927. The most stunning feature on the house is the broken ogee pediment above the entrance, which is very rare especially in such high detail. The door is framed by bracketed pilasters and a fixed transom window. Keystones interrupt the brick window lintels and nearly all of the windows feature traditional small panes, with eight over eight or six over six sashes. The main difference between a 1700s Georgian homes and this revival is the paired windows. The deep cornice contains both dentils and modillions. Note the triple dormers.

A Rock Island High School graduate, Dr. Raymond Criswell became a dentist with an office in the Rock Island Bank Building. After Dr. Criswell's death, Mrs. Criswell continued living here until 1983. At that time it was purchased by Ted and Julie Harrison, who completed a loving restoration, including Colonial colors for the interior, during the ten years they lived here. In 1993, the home was purchased by Mark and Deborah Schwiebert. Attorney Mark Schwiebert has the distinction of being Rock Island's longest serving mayor. He was an alderman for eight years, beginning in 1981, and then served as mayor from 1989 to 2009.

The current owners of the home still possess architect's drawings and original landscape plans for the home. There have been very few alterations to the house over the years, foremost being the removal of louvered and paneled shutters, some of which were hinged for the double windows. However, the shutters are still in storage on the property.
