The flat, cantilevered roof and large expanses of glass in window walls mark the Carlson home as International style. Vertical wood cladding is common in later International style homes. Completely asymmetrical, this home has a two story section over the garage and a long extended wing to the south. Unusual in most International homes, the bracing for the cantilevered section is plainly visible. Another unique feature is the angled cornice at the roof line. There is a great deal of integration into the landscape here, with the placement into the hillside, resulting in the house being barely visible from the road.
The first owners of the home were Elly and Henry Carlson, Jr. Mr. Carlson was owner of Henry Carlson Signs, which later became Ragan Outdoor Advertising and then Lamar Advertising. Elly Carlson, a native of Sweden, was very active in the local theatre scene and a regular performer with Playcrafters Theatre. She also served on the board of directors of the Quad City Symphony.
